Dear TIME Detroit Team:

I’m really thankful for this project, but I’m curious what you’re doing to further connect the Time and Detroit communities. You’re using social media, but not engaging with the thriving and vibrant Detroit social media community. Twitter isn’t supposed to be an RSS aggregator. Respect the 917 people following you and ENGAGE! That’s what will bring Detroit together. That’s what will help Detroit.

There’s so much POTENTIAL there. Contact me and I’ll get you moving!

Shauna, a proud member of Detroit’s social media community

If you haven’t heard about this project yet, take notice. Time is setting up camp in Detroit for a year, reporting on the way they see it. Sounds like the perfect time to make big things happen, no?

Spot-on, Shauna. This advice goes not only for time, but for any company running a twitter account. You aren’t participating if you’re broadcasting 24/7 and never stop to listen or converse.

So true… and it’s unfortunate. To really dig deep into an audience who may not be reached via their traditional efforts (aka us on Twitter) wouldn’t be a huge effort nor can I see it yielding negative results.

There are some select ways the Assignment Detroit team chooses to converse with the online community (i.e. the online chat hosted by @Freep’s O-Street on their Web site: http://www.freep.com/article/20091008/BLOG19/91008045/1202/RSS/Chat-with-Time–How-d-it-go?) but utilizing a medium where they already host a presence and actually listening may turn over those stones in the community they’re looking for anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. I hadn’t known about the chat, Kaylee. I wonder what kind of successes they’re having with it…
I hope TIME is listening :)
